Prepare your gang to be wowed when you choose this 11-bedroomed holiday home for your next group getaway in the Peak District National Park. The Georgian facade of this former print works and post office is impressive, but it does nothing to prepare you for what’s inside: step through the doors of this 200-year-old building and you are confronted with serious style. You are seamlessly led through ever more contemporary spaces to an indoor swimming pool, which is separated, only by glass, from the garden. There you’ll find a Swedish hot tub, an al fresco kitchen and the wilderness beckoning you to explore beyond the river, which rushes by on three sides.

The ground floor comprises all the sociable spaces for your group: a cinema room, the lounge with its huge sofas and log burner, the stainless steel kitchen, and the dining room, which doubles as a yoga studio. Then there's the swimming pool and the terraced garden where you'll find the striking 10 metre stone table for al fresco dining. The stone floors soften to dark wood as you head upstairs to the guest bedrooms, 10 of which have en-suites and super-king-size beds that can be configured as twins. Up on the third floor, a clever use of space means you can sleep 10 more guests in single beds set in alcoves in the eaves. Heavy curtains give more privacy than a typical dorm and there’s a bathroom and shower to share.

The styling here is confident, the finish is high end and the artwork, which changes intermittently, is carefully curated. That’s part of the signature style of ARC, a collaboration of two architectural practices which are reimagining the English country house experience for the travellers of today. So far they’ve done it successfully with Cornwall's ARC Padstow and ARC Painswick in the Cotswolds, and they have many more in the pipeline.

At each of these self-catering properties, the art and architecture is only part of what’s on offer. There’s also an online 'Lobby' service which guides you on the extras available in each house and on and on activities nearby. This might be a chef to come and cater your dinner party, a yoga teacher or masseur, or just someone to take you out on a local tour. In this location, in the western Peak District, you could take on any number of walks. You could also climb, cave or kayak in a variety of stunning locations across the park. Or perhaps visit the pretty town of Buxton, six miles up the road. Chatsworth House and Bakewell are only 20 miles away and even Manchester is not much further. Tempted? You should be!

Getting There

From Buxton, use the A53 and then the A54 to travel six miles south west towards Congleton. Turn right when you see a sign for Wildboarclough and after another mile you will find ARC Peaks on the right. You won't miss it as there's a red telephone box at the gate.
