Bel and the Dragon
Godalming, Surrey, GU7 1HY
If you've ever been in a church and experienced a sudden urge to stuff food into your face, you're going to love this place: a top-quality restaurant housed in 17th century congressional church. It was a bar before it became a temple of the tummy, but the architecture is clearly still that of a church. People now come back with religious regularity to kneel at the alter of fine dining, with head chef Daniel Cohan and group head chef, Ronnie Kimbugwe (former sous chef of Gordon Ramsay at Claridges) serving modern British cuisine – all created using locally sourced ingredients. Prices are reasonable and dishes are created in full view of the bar, so your juices will be flowing before you've even finished your unique Bel & The Dragon cocktail, such as the Bel Bloody Caesar or the Elderbubble. Events at the restaurant include wine dinners (pairing tucker with tipple), live music performances and classes in cocktail concoction. We hesitate to call this a chain, but there are sister restaurants operating under the same name in Churt (also Surrey), Cookham (Berkshire), Reading (Berkshire) and Windsor (Berkshire) - they're all in interesting buildings dripping with history, but none of the others are in a church.
