Hidden deep in the Surrey hills in National Trust woodland, close to Polesden Lacey, this hostel is accessible only by walking or cycling and is all the more attractive for it. It's a beautifully converted 17th-century cottage that is well-equipped for self-caterers, with wood-burning barbecues in the beautiful gardens and an open fire inside. Just don't rock up expecting any en-suite luxuries – all the toilets and showers are in a separate building outside, although they do have a self-catering kitchen and dining room, a lounge, drying room and a cycle store.

Accommodation is in two dorms, one with 6 beds, the other 7, and there's one private double room. There are also two fabulous two-bedroom safari tents (sleeping 4 to 6 people) that really make the most of the location – and come complete with mattresses, bedding and a wood-burner. Or there's camping in the nearby woods for up to 14 people – and campers can use all the hostel facilities.

The cottage is surrounded by footpaths and bridleways that meander into Surrey's gorgeous countryside, and there is no end to the exploring you can do from one of the YHA's best hostels for walkers. You should probably come expecting to self-cater in the evening though – the nearest places to eat out are an hour's walk away.

This hostel is also available for exclusive hire. Click here for details.

Getting There

From Box Hill and Westhumble station, turn left out of station and follow the road to Badgen Farm – take the track on the left indicated by a YHA sign. Pass the farmhouse on your right side and take the first right along a bridleway by the side of a barn. Walk straight across the field to the gate on the other side and turn left onto the track. The hostel is 400m up on the right. By car – take the A2003 Ashcombe Road off the A24 in Dorking, and turn right at the T-junction towards Ranmore and Effingham. At the top of the hill is Denbies Hillside National Trust car park – the nearest car park to the hostel – which is free to National Trust members. From the car park cross over the road and turn left, walk along to Four Fox Cottages (on your right) and go through the gate by its side. Take the central track indicated by the YHA signs, and the hostel is about 15 minutes' walk through the wood.
