With a history dating back over 500 years, and a guestlist that includes names such as Charles Dickens, Jane Austin and Lord Horatio Nelson, the Angel can justifiably claim to be one of the most interesting places to stay in Surrey. Located slap bang in the centre of Guildford since the Middle Ages, the former posting house and coaching inn now offers 21 bedrooms – ranging from deluxe doubles and twins with four-poster beds, through to the more modern 'Apartment', which is kitted out for self caterers. The stone-vaulted undercroft – available for private dining and banquets – dates back to the 1300s and still has the remains of the original spiral staircase, and the hotel serves guests drinks down here in the atmospheric Crypt Bar. They also have a good upstairs restaurant. The Angel is the final stop on the Guildford Ghost Tour, and among the ghostly apparitions that are said to be regulars here is the spectral figure of foreign soldier.

Same experience as sleeping rough in a park
nice room, but way too hot, couldn't sleep.
When we got back to the hotel after the theatre we wanted a nightcap drink, to be honest even a cup of tea would have been welcome but there are no facilities at all on the premises, no guest bar or lounge area to sit and relax. We were directed to Bill's restaurant, a high street chain that forms part of The Angel Hotel. Staff there were simply just rude and unhelpful. We asked if we could have a glass of wine and were told they only serve alcohol with food, did we want to eat. Given that it was 20 minutes to 11, no we didn't! We asked for a cup of tea and that was also refused. We spoke to someone at reception and they said "they have been so busy in the restaurant, they were even refusing room service tonight". I chose the Angel because it was walking distance to both the restaurant and the theatre that we were going to but I wouldn't book here again based purely on the service and attitude which was dire at best. The Angel should be the heart of Guildford instead it's more like the cardiac arrest! Someone bring a defibrillator!
