This 14th century Surrey inn is one of England's oldest places to stay, yet boasts plenty of contemporary hospitality
Just a couple of miles south of Godalming in Surrey, Chiddingfold was a famous medieval glass-making centre until 1615. Today, you can immerse yourself in its history by spending the night in one of England’s oldest inns. The Crown’s four luxurious Tudor-style bedrooms are located in the oldest part of the inn, all with heavy beams, vintage furniture and antique four-poster bed. Three of these rooms have a roll-top bath. Or, if you prefer, there are a further four bedrooms — three Classic rooms and a single — that are more contemporary in style with king-size beds and bath or walk-in shower. A welcome tray is provided in all the guest rooms.
The main bar and the stunning oak-panelled restaurant exudes yet more historic wonder — some of the original deeds (from 1383) hang above the grand fireplace. Marvel at the family crests adorning the stained-glass windows while you browse the eclectic menu which focuses on seasonal ingredients and offers a variety of fish, veggie and meat dishes. A decent cooked breakfast includes a Full English fit for a king or queen.
The Crown is handy for the Surrey Hills, which provide lots of walking and outdoor activities, plus there’s gin tasting at the nearby Silent Pool distillery, while to the south Petworth House, just over the border in West Sussex to explore. It really is a perfect place for a short break from the city.
