The Haslemere Cellar
16 West Street, Haslemere, Surrey, GU27 2AB
Follow your nose to this charismatic specialist purveyor of damn fine wines and cheeses that are as aromatic as they are splendid. Founder and owner Richard Royds is the divine wine guru here, while very-Frenchman Stephane Jacob is the big cheese when it comes to fantastic fromage. They make quite the pair. Richard typically selects wines from small producers in regions that span the globe from France, Germany, Italy and Spain across to Australia, New Zealand, South Africa and California. One of two champagnes they stock is Gosset, founded in 1584 - the oldest Grande Marque in Champagne. There's also a range of meticulously selected malt whiskies, plus numerous other fine spirits such as Caribbean rum, and beyond the booze you can find Havana cigars, caviar, excellent coffee from the Exchange Coffee Company and accompanying non-edible products such as Riedel glassware. The knowledge in this small place is outstanding, but it's always delivered with a grin and a bit of banter. Most Saturday mornings you can stroll up and taste some fine wines, and nibble some cheeses and charcuterie tip bit.
