It’s quite a surprise encountering this extraordinarily grand country railway station, built in 1892 for when high society bound for the races at Goodwood – including the future Edward VII – arrived here from London. Nowadays, road is the only way of getting to the idiosyncratic hotel that occupies the site, as the line has long closed, a victim of Dr Beeching’s axe in 1966. Happily none of the period detail has been lost: a model of the last steam engine to come through here stands on the fireplace in the opulent, high-ceilinged waiting room, itself furnished with sturdy leather armchairs and sofas. Breakfast is in here or on the platform, and the accommodation is divided between the station itself where there are two bedrooms, the top floor one is an attic room with beams and bucket of charm whilst the downstairs bedroom is perfect for people with mobility problems. There are 8 early 20th-century Pullman carriage rooms resplendent in mahogany and suitably adorned with framed railway posters. They all have en-suite facilities. This is a hotel like none other.
