A sinuous stretch of the Thames borders perhaps the world’s most historic meadow, the site of the 1215 signing of the Magna Carta. A short walk from the National Trust café and car park, a small 1950s memorial pays tribute to the original bill of rights. Nearby is a memorial to John F Kennedy, and on the wooded hilltop, the hauntingly lovely Air Forces Memorial dedicated to those who died in WWII. There’s plenty of space to picnic along the willow-fringed riverbank, and a larger car park two minutes further down the road gives access to a children’s play area.
