Chic riverside accommodation opposite Hampton Court Palace
Book your stay securely on a third-party website
This chic, riverside Grade-II listed boutique hotel, across the road from Hampton Court Palace, is certainly befitting of its stately royal neighbour. Hector Ross, former boss of Beaverbrook, has not spared any expense in creating a luxury bolthole that combines cool, cosy and contemporary.
The hotel opened in 2020, and its contemporary design by Nicola Harding is front of stage, with bold patterns and wallpapers and a staggering 221 paint colours in what is by any standards a high quality interior. An original tapestry, antiques, hand-painted de Gournay wallpaper and a specially commissioned map of the area by illustrator Gwen Burns grace the public areas. A glass of wine on arrival sets the tone for a relaxing stay. Each of the 36 luxurious rooms is different but styled with patterned wallpaper and antique wing chairs. Some have four-poster bed, others standalone bath with river views. Coffee machine, robes and minibar complete the offering., with a bottle of Kings Ginger liquor a delicious nightcap.
For dinner, bag a seat by the window in the buzzy 1665 Brasserie and watch boats on the River Thames cruise by while dining on spicy Thai mussels or succulent Beef Wellington. 1665 is the date when the original Mitre Hotel was built as an Inn to accommodate travellers and guests of the palace. The elegant library, with fun retro juke-box, is just the place to curl up with a book or a digestif afterwards.
Dogs are welcome in some rooms and all public spaces except the 1665 Brasserie, and complimentary tickets to Hampton Court Palace are a nice bonus. The hotel can arrange boat trips and picnics for guests; Bushy Park and river walks are close by, and Ham House and Kew Gardens a short drive away. A great base for this part of London, and not that far form the city centre either.
