Polruan
Polruan-by-Fowey, PL23 1PH
The ancient fishing village of Polruan lies just across the estuary from Fowey and is reached most easily by passenger ferry. To arrive by car you’ll need to take the car ferry to Bodinnick and navigate the winding country lanes, which takes a good deal longer. The attraction of this small village is its unspoilt simplicity. It’s fascinating to wander the maze of backstreets meandering up the steep hill to where the views over the estuary and over to Fowey are breathtaking. While you’re here stop off to see the Blockhouse, St Saviours ruin, the remains of an 8th-century church, and continue along the coastal footpath to enjoy some beautiful scenery. There are a couple of decent pubs in Polruan, and two B&Bs, the best by far being the family-run Hormond House.
