A whitewashed Victorian building that was once a refuge for the sailors that moored on its doorstep, the Old Quay House is now a chic, boutique hotel nudging the River Fowey. Architect designed, with elegant, modern décor, the Deluxe rooms are right on the river – sit at the window and all you can hear is the water lapping and boats passing. In the town-facing rooms there can be some noise from passers-by – but for many visitors being part of vibrant village life, is part of the joy of being here. The food in its Q Restaurant is excellent, with a refreshing and sensible emphasis on quality – there's just a handful of starters, mains and desserts every night -- and the waterside terrace is a fantastic place to eat. There are just 13 bedrooms in total, with another two planned, so it's best to book in advance during peak of summer. For a splurge, the spacious Penthouse offers the best views in the building with floor to ceiling windows: a real treat in this scenic spot. As for hotel life, expect a relaxed and social feel, attentive but never intrusive service, and country house touches, like the open fire, serve-yourself cheese cupboard (along with a lovely selection of ports available from the bar) and a library. The best rooms come with binoculars, while all rooms come with waterproof jackets and … teddy bears – the latter, to be put outside the door instead of a Do Not Disturb sign.

Note, no under 12s allowed, but families would in any case be better off at the lovely, more family-friendly Rosevine on the Roseland peninsula near Falmouth, which is owned by the same people.

Getting There

Travelling from Plymouth, follow the A38, bypassing Liskeard and Dobwalls and taking onto the A390 to St Austell. Drive through Lostwithiel and up the hill, after approximately 1 mile, turn left onto the B3269 to Fowey. From Exeter, leave the M5 at junction 31 onto the A30 to Bodmin. At Bodmin take the A389 through the town and pick up the B3269 to Fowey. Once in Fowey, follow the A3082 form the outskirts of town and at the second mini roundabout, take the first exit, and then the first exit at the third mini roundabout. Follow the road downhill and turn left at the bend onto Lostwithiel Street. Follow this into town along Fore Street – the Old Quay House is on the right.

The hotel does not have its own car park but we can supply a parking permit for the Harbour Commissioners Car Park about 800 yards on from the hotel (the cost is included in your room rate). We recommend you stop off at the hotel to drop off your bags and collect your permit and then head off to the car park.
