Despite its famous moor, Bodmin isn't Cornwall's most most visited corner by any means, but if anything can put the town on the tourist map, it's the Bodmin Jail Hotel, which opened in the summer of 2021 after a £60m conversion from a Victorian prison. The jail shut down almost a century ago, but it was a state-of-the art facility in its day, with hot running water and individual cells making it very much the prison of choice for the discerning jailbird. Perhaps it's no surprise, then, that someone had the bright idea to turn its two wings into a luxury hotel, with no less than 70 very comfortable guest rooms. If you're looking for somewhere to stay in the heart of Cornwall that's both stylish and comfortable but also utterly unique, you've come to the right place.
The jail has been so well converted that it's a surprise this sort of thing isn't done more often, with the classic design of the 19th-century prison lending itself perfectly to that of a contemporary hotel, with long, light-filled glass-topped atriums and the walkways on either side giving access to the guest rooms. These aim to blend the heritage of the prison with all the features you expect in a modern luxury hotel – bare granite, metre-thick walls combining with crisp and contemporary furnishings and facilities. All the rooms come with good wifi, tea- and coffee-making facilities, mini bars, flatscreen TVs and spacious en-suite bathrooms with locally made toiletries. Categories are refreshingly simple, ranging from modestly priced 'Classic' rooms to the more expensive Executive Governor's rooms. All the rooms feature king-size beds, baths and little extras like robes. There are several larger 'Family' rooms, which have an additional fold-out sofa bed, and a number of 'Accessible' rooms, with space for wheelchairs and specially adapted bathrooms. They also have a number of dog-friendly rooms so your canine companion can join you on your jailbreak caper.
Finally, the hotel's location, right on Cornwall's spinal highway, the A30, is not only very easy to reach but also very convenient for much of the rest of the county, You're a short drive from either coast, and the hotel sits right at the end of the Camel Trail, which follows a disused railway line all the way to Padstow; picturesque Fowey, St Austell and the Eden Project are a short drive south, while closer to home Bodmin Moor itself beckons – home to great walking and Cornwall's highest point, and some of the county's most mysterious sights and legends in places like Jamaica Inn. You really couldn't ask for a more convenient – or unique – base for any exploration of Cornwall's heartland.
