Home to three rustic yet chic yurts sleeping up to five, and a shepherd's hut that houses two, it's ideal for couples and families looking for the more secluded side of Cornwall. Named after the farm’s apple trees, each beautiful yurt boasts a striking central crown that lets in bundles of natural light. Inside, you'll find comfy beds, a kitchenette and cooking equipment, plus a dining table and a wood burner for cooler evenings. Choose three-person Gilliflower – situated in the quietest position in its very own orchard – and be greeted by a double handmade elm bed and a single mattress. Tregonna King nestles near woodland, sleeps two to four (five on request), and is decorated with blue Indian silks and reclaimed furniture. Meanwhile, Fern Pippin is near the stream and decked out in pink and green hues (suitable for up to five, upon request). All have a picnic table, fire bowl and their own facilities a short meander away, including a compost toilet and hot shower.
And the shepherd's hut? Ismay is the ideal bolthole for couples or friends, complete with a double bed and an extra bunk. There's also a kitchen hut and BBQ, creating an outdoor camping vibe, and a shower shed. Whichever unit you choose, come nightfall, you’ll be looking up and admiring some of the most dazzling star-studded skies to be found in this part of the country. For your culinary needs, it's worth noting that Cotna sells a variety of organic homegrown produce and hampers filled with all manner of delights like sourdough, jams, juices, and free-range eggs from the resident hens.
As for activities, if walking's your thing, Cotna Eco Retreat is perfectly situated close to the South West Coast Path and the sandy coves and beaches of Gorran Haven, Caerhays, Hemmick and Vault. Or wander down the valley to Portmellon, where you can get great coffee and food at The Shack and hire kayaks and paddleboards from The Paddle Shed or enjoy a pint at the Rising Sun pub. Historic Veryan and St. Mawes are within easy reach by car, and The Lost Gardens of Heligan are a mere two miles away. On days spent chilling out at the retreat, you may want to sign up to one of the courses on offer, from breadmaking to gardening. There are therapists available for treatments like Shiatsu too. Or maybe you'll prefer to kick back and simply take in the peace and quiet of Cotna’s secluded valley – we wouldn’t blame you.
