Whinlatter Forest Park
Whinlatter Pass Braithwaite CA12 5TW
England has only one real mountain forest – Whinlatter, sited a few miles out of Keswick en route to Buttermere. It’s a tried-and-tested outdoors adventure centre, with bike rental available for the forest park’s excellent purpose-made mountain-bike trails (some of them extremely challenging), plus the forest high-ropes course known as Go Ape! (reservations essential on the Go Ape website). There are also lots of other walks, nature trails and family activities, from play areas to orienteering courses, while the café has a great balcony with views of the local peak, Grisedale Pike. Come in spring and summer and the osprey web-cam is switched on, showing you the lives of nearby Bassenthwaite’s wild ospreys, up close and personal.
