The YHA has plenty of hostels for walkers in the Lake District, but YHA Borrowdale stands out as something of a favourite. Set in large grounds on the banks of the River Derwent and surrounded by the high fells, it's a recommended stop on Wainwright’s Coast-to-Coast walk and has a typically friendly, welcoming atmosphere. Refreshingly located a little distance away from many of the Lake District's busier tourist hotspots, it's also one of the YHA's largest Lake District hostels, with getting on for 100 beds, so often has room when nearby hostels are full. It has a mixture of dorm beds and private rooms, a drying room and laundry, a self-catering kitchen, a very nice bar and restaurant – and extensive grounds, where there is a room for up to 25 campers during the summer months, and also for three wooden camping pods, each of which sleeps three people and has its own individual decking area. Campers have access to all of the hostel facilities, but there are separate campsite toilets and showers. And the location? It's situated in a landscape of epic proportions, perfect for climbing and hiking and family-friendly walking holidays, while the busy town of Keswick is only seven miles away.

From Keswick follow the B5289 to Borrowdale and look for the YHA signs at the crossroads, 0.5 miles after Rosthwaite. By public transport, the nearest bus stop is a 300m walk away at Stonethwaite Road End. The #78 and #77 buses from Keswick stop here at frequent intervals during the summer.
