Run by Neil and Jane Walmsley for almost 40 years, the Old Dungeon Ghyll, situated at the tiop of the Seeeping Great Langdale valley, is a classic Lake District walkers’ hotel. A visit to its hiker’s bar here is a rite-of-passage for anyone in the Great Langdale area, and the 12 comfortable, traditionally furnished rooms upstairs have for decades provided a cosy refuge for walkers after a long day on the Fells. It also has a slightly posher bar for residents, and overall makes for a refreshingly old-school place to stay; there are no TVs in the rooms, and not much in the way of a mobile or wifi signal to speak of, but that is really the point of staying here, much like the excellent hearty food they serve throughout the day to fuel all that outdoor activity. Dogs are almost obligatory in what must be on the national park’s most scenic and most active locations, and there’s perhaps no better view to wake up to, and certainly no better place for an early morning walk.
