The Royal Oak
Hurdlow Nr Buxton Derybyshire SK17 9QJ
After standing empty for too long, this handsome, solid old drinking pub has been rescued by entrepreneurial business partners Paul and Justin who have breathed new life into it. With a bundle of cash and a lot of hard work they’ve created a cosy, welcoming place that locals and visitors can enjoy. They've approached the renovation thoughtfully and have kept all the good bits: beams, open fires, exposed stone walls and comfortable seating, and added an extra room (great for a party!) with views over the fields. Honest, hearty pub grub comes out of the shiny new kitchen; everything’s homemade and great value for money. Expect game pie, butternut squash, spinach and walnut lasagne, pork fillet in Grand Marnier cream sauce and black pudding mash – plus, an unexpected and very welcome recent addition, locally cured wild boar and their own cured beef served with olives, parmesan shavings and crusty bread. Delicious! Local beers include Hartingtons, Pedigree and the award-winning Thornbridge ales. The stunning Tissington Trail (for walkers and cyclists) is on the doorstep, just as well if you’re going the whole hog with lemon and blueberry meringue roulade to finish. They've also found time to convert a group of old farm buildings into stylish, roomy self catering cottages, a mere 15 minutes' walk from the pub.
