The Snakecatcher
Lyndhurst Road Brockenhurst Hampshire SO42 7RL
This welcoming pub is named after eccentric local Victorian Harry Mills, who is said to have caught 30,000 New Forest snakes in his lifetime to sell to zoos and whoever would buy them, and who frequented the pub when it was known as the Railway (the station is just over the road). Nowadays it is the best place around here for good-value pub food. Expect the likes of venison sausages, home-made burgers, scampi and fish and chips, and enormous steaks that you can cook yourself on a hot stone. There are also great sharing platters, salads and sandwiches. There's a spacious interior – with fires in winter – and attractive beer garden.
