The hidden gem of West Wight, Calbourne is arguably the prettiest village on the island, famous for the film-set perfection of Winkle Street with its audibly babbling brook and thatched cottages. Calbourne Water Mill, set in 10 acres of tranquil countryside and mentioned in the Domesday Book, is the last working water mill on the island. With homespun museums of war and rural crafts, a pottery and a children’s clay play area, flour-milling demonstrations, croquet on the lawns and boats to hire on the pond, there’s plenty here to keep a family busy.
