Cowes is in many ways the liveliest town on the island all year round, but during the sailing festival of Cowes Week in the first week of August and the ‘Round The Island’ yacht race at the end of June, the town’s world-renowned atmosphere and spectacle are flamboyantly in evidence, delivered by massive welcome injections of mainland spending power, with crowds of visitors and a huge firework display on Cowes Week’s last Friday. At any time of year, however, the town’s winding, pedestrianised high street offers unusual shopping and several good places to eat and drink.
