Often overshadowed by famous images of Oxford and Cambridge, Canterbury is an equally peaceful place to punt along between the spires. The Canterbury Punting Company run tours along the River Stour from March till October - lie back and relax on the cushions while someone else does all the work. As well as the standard 40-minute city tour they also offer jaunts out into the countryside and nighttime candlelit ghost tours, all accompanied by a guide in striped blazer and straw boater. Umbrella-like canopies will protect you on rainy days.
