Simple but effective are the words that ring true here. Right next to the Cathedral, any closer and you would sleep inside the holy place. This venerable rambling medieval building with a stunning central location on Buttermarket dates back to 1438, in fact, pilgrims slept on this very spot. A couple of the rooms have amazing cathedral views; others are more basic, with shared bathrooms. Thanks to the ancient building, the whole place is a bit higgledy-piggledy, with sloping floors and low doorways. Slightly rundown in places but full of atmosphere, this is a hotel that can't fail but win you over with its aged but traditional charm. Having said that, the rooms feature a TV, coffee making facilities and Wi-Fi is available throughout. There's a small reading lounge and continental breakfast is included in the price, you can also opt for a full English for a small price, no traveller medieval or otherwise should start the day on an empty stomach.

Basic, but cosy
I loved it. It's very old fashioned, and ramshackle, and basic, but clean and friendly and in a brilliant position. And for solo travellers it is a real bargain.
