Dane John Gardens
Watling Street Canterbury CT1 2RN
Probably the city’s most popular park, laid out as lawns and gardens with fountains and a bandstand where there are concerts most summer weekends. The city walls mark one edge of the gardens, and on this side is the Dane John Mound, originally a burial mound, later incorporated into the Roman fortifications, and still later the city’s original motte-and-bailey castle. A small café completes the picture as you wander the footpaths in the sun. This is a slice of countryside in the heart of Canterbury, a perfect little break from the bustling summer streets.
