Grassington
Grassington Wharfedale North Yorkshire BD23 5LB
The main village in Wharfedale is Grassington, which has a cobbled Georgian centre full of handsome old stone buildings sloping up a hill. It's generally choc-full of visitors, and can lose its charm on both wet days and scorchers when all the shops, pubs and cafés are filled to bursting. But there's a strong community vibe here, with plenty going on, from farmers' markets to film nights, while the summer's big event is the arts and culture Grassington Festival. If you park up at the National Park Centre you'll be set for a day's local exploration, including a walk to the nearby Linton Falls; you should also call into the cute neighbouring hamlet of Linton itself, which has a great pub on the green, the Fountaine Inn.
