If you're looking for proper, on-the-farm, Yorkshire glamping with plenty to do nearby, you can’t really ask for much better than the pods and bell tents at Catgill Farm. Set in the undulating meadows just outside the village of Bolton Abbey in the Yorkshire Dales, it's a real slice of heaven on a site that's been a traditional dairy farm for over sixty years. Owner Oliver was born here – his grandad used to run the farm – and together with his family he runs the operation with a meticulous eye for what makes a great glamping experience.
There's a camping meadow with lots of space for tents, but the glamping action takes place on a separate, elevated site on the edge of woodland, with sweeping, picture-postcard views down over the Wharfe valley. The ten timber pods each sleep up to six, with access through a circular, Hobbit-style glass entrance. It's almost a holiday-cottage experience – think en-suite shower room, compact but fully equipped kitchen, hot running water, radiators for heating, TV, wifi and charging points. Sleeping is in a double bed, bunk beds and sofa bed, while outside each pod there's a landscaped, private patio with log-fired hot tub, dining area, and firepit/barbecue with combined pizza oven. Like we say, this is classy accommodation whatever you call it, but it's a far cry from simple camping that's for sure.
The two bell tents are in the same location and sleep up to four people. It's the same luxurious set-up as the pods, just under canvas, with a double bed and two futons, power and wifi provided, plenty of space and storage, plus heating and cooking on a log-burner. Outside you will find a hot tub, picnic table and firepit/barbecue/pizza oven on your own private patio.
The glam doesn't stop at the site – this whole area is part of the Duke of Devonshire's great Yorkshire estate, centred on Bolton Abbey village, a 15-minute stroll down the lane. Here, the 12th-century ruins of Bolton Abbey Priory are an absolute must-see, with riverside picnic spots, stepping stones and rolling meadow walks, and a pavilion cafe that makes a great target for a stroll. Nearest pub, 15 minutes' walk away, is the very agreeable Devonshire Arms, with outdoor seating and local beers, a brasserie and a fancier restaurant. In the opposite direction, the Yorkshire Dales Ice Cream Factory is a half-hour stroll away. And if you feel you need to work up an appetite for any of those options, the Dales Way footpath opens up the whole of the Yorkshire Dales beyond, while the nearest bridleway for cyclists is just a mile from the farm. You really wouldn't need to drive the whole time you were here, but Skipton, the nearest market town, is only ten minutes' away too.Gallery
