Embsay & Bolton Abbey Steam Railway
Embsay Station Skipton BD23 6RP
Travel by steam through gentle Dales countryside to the station at Bolton Abbey
– a gracious way to arrive at the estate for a day out by the river. Embsay station lies just outside Skipton, and there are steam trains every Sunday throughout the year, and daily in school holidays, as well as all sorts of other services, from Christmas specials to historic, first-class "Stately Trains". It's a four-mile, 15-minute run to Bolton Abbey, from where there's a mile-and-a-half walk through the fields and along the river (past the Devonshire Arms) to Bolton Abbey and the ruined priory. You can park for free at either station. They are also pretty proud of their Buffet Car, which runs with the trains most weekends – carrying thirty different locally brewed ales and even a Lancashire whisky.
