Millennium Square
Millennium Square, Leeds LS1 3DW
At the heart of contemporary Leeds is the big sloping public square where stuff happens, from big-screen sports to the annual winter ice rink, by way of all manner of meets, demos, festivals and outdoor events. It’s flanked by eye-catching buildings, from the Civic Institute to the City Museum, and the raised terrace at the Wetherspoon’s pub, the Cuthbert Broderick, is the best vantage point on a sunny day. Nelson Mandela officially opened the space in 2001; there’s still a garden area named after him.
