The North Yorkshire village of Askwith is home to a coaching inn that’s been providing bed and board to travellers for upwards of 150 years. It's changed names and owners in that time, but the current ones are determined to provide hospitality that’s fit for modern times and the future. The Penny Bun, as they call it now, has been reimagined as a contemporary coaching inn: that doesn’t mean it’s glossy and shiny though – quite the opposite, in fact, with the result that The Penny Bun is a relaxed, sophisticated and understated place to stay that’s very much rooted in its surroundings.
The name, The Penny Bun, is the first nod to that – referring to the edible mushrooms that grow in the surrounding Denton Reserve. In late summer, you might find them on the menu of the restaurant alongside other seasonal foraged and farmed produce. The championing of the local area and the environment is followed through in furniture, fabrics and decor used throughout the inn. Wherever possible, things have been sourced from nearby or chosen for their eco-credentials, as well as for comfort, of course.
Upstairs, the five guest rooms have natural wool mattresses with linen bedding. There’s soft lighting, earthy colours and dark wood which all combine to help you feel relaxed. The scent of the room, incense, and essential oils from organic toiletries assist with that too – and the fact that there’s no TV. These are consciously screen-free spaces that encourage you to switch off, although there is WiFi if you need it, along with a Bluetooth speaker. All of the bedrooms have an en-suite wet room with a rainfall shower; the largest has a freestanding bath under a high, vaulted ceiling as well.
Downstairs, the dining room and two snugs are wooden floored, candle-lit and cosy. There’s also outdoor space for when the weather is good, with a terrace boasting spectacular views over the Wharfe Valley. Whatever the weather, The Penny Bun provides a timelessly warm welcome as a place to stop off at or return to after days out walking by the River Wharfe, on Denton, Askwith or Ilkley Moor, or in the nearby Yorkshire Dales National Park. You can be there in half an hour and in Harrogate in less than that.
