Granary Wharf
Dark Arches, Leeds LS1 4BR
City regeneration is in full swing down at Granary Wharf, behind the train station, where the old quaysides, locks and viaducts at the junction of the River Aire and Leeds–Liverpool canal have been mightily spruced-up. It’s the usual commercial and residential mix, with a plaza of bars and restaurants overlooked by apartment buildings and the DoubleTree hotel, and a walk around the locks and along the canal shows off a different side of city-centre Leeds. For the most atmospheric approach, follow Neville Street behind the station and then walk through the Victorian red-brick-tunnelled ‘dark arches’, which wind right under the station to the quayside.
