The Tetley
Hunslet Road Leeds LS10 1JQ
There was a general wailing and gnashing of Leeds teeth when the Tetley brewery closed down in 2011, so all praise the rebirth of the old brewery HQ as a new centre for contemporary art and learning. It's housed in the magnificent Art Deco brewery building, with its gorgeous interior detailing still pretty much intact. What you get on top is a super art space curated by Project Space Leeds, hosting an exciting programme of changing exhibitions, events, happenings, workshops and family activities. It's a new style of gallery space on this scale for Leeds, rooted in the community, so expect innovative projects with a strong heritage and social base, drawing on Leeds' important industrial past. The cafe-bar and restaurant is a destination in its own right too, meaning that dropping in for a coffee, a pint or a meal always throws up the possibility of stumbling upon a diverting show of some kind or another.
