Fforest Fields Cottage

You couldn't get closer to the heart of rural Wales than by staying in one of the holiday cottages on this delightful family farm and campsite, situated just a few miles outside Llandrindod Wells in the midst of the green rolling hills of Powys. They have a glamping site too, with a selection of very comfy lakeside yurts, if you want the camping experience without the effort; and some people come back year after year –  to walk, fish, canoe or swim, or just commune with nature and do a bit of tree-hugging.

Ffynnonau sleeps 5 comfortably.  It has a double bedroom, a twin and a small single, the bathroom is downstairs but there is an upstairs toilet. It is beautifully furnished and has a log fire for chilly evenings. There is a pretty front garden and a sun-trap of a sitting out and barbecue area at the back.

There are two lakes for fishing, swimming and paddling, with a small beach and a jetty with kayaks if you want to get out on the water. And that's before you've ventured into the countryside beyond, which is glorious – you can go mountain-biking at nearby Aberwesyn, head into Llandrindod Wells, which was one of the country's most elegant spa towns in its Victorian heyday, or catch the renowned World Bog-Snorkelling Championships, which takes place every year at a peat bog just outside Lanwrytd Wells – a truly Welsh institution if ever there was one.
