Situated a few miles north of the charming town of Dunblane, on the edge of the Loch Lomond and Trossachs National Park, Comrie Croft is as good – and as convenient – an introduction to the natural glories of Scotland as you would wish for. An eco-friendly Highland oasis with direct access to some fantastic mountain-bike trails and a wide choice of accommodation from a cosy 3-room hostel in an old farmhouse and dorms in a larger converted farmstead, to brilliant camping adn glamping either in a lowland meadow close to other campers and all the excellent amenities, or in wilder hillside and woodland pitches.
You can also cheat a little by hiring one of their Nordic katas, 7 sumptuous tipis replete with a wood-burning stove, throws, cushions and solar powered lighting. There is a solar- and wind-powered amenities block with toilets and good hot showers (including some with disabled access seats), while compost loos are available in the upper meadow, furthest from the main toilet block. There’s a bike and biking equipment store with cycle training, bike and helmet hire and advice on accessing the the 87+km of beautiful walks and bike routes in the Crieff–Comrie paths network.
The Tea Garden, meanwhile, fills up hungry campers and glampers with everything from breakfast rolls and freshly made sandwiches to irresistible home-baked croissants and bacon rolls for breakfast and the likes of salmon bagels with cream cheese and salad for lunch. The vintage crockery is a nice touch, as is the wooden deck. The cakes are also homemade and huge, you have been warned!
It’s a great location, with fabulous walking and cycle trails in every direction, so even if you arrive by car, you can tuck your keys away for the duration of your stay. It’s also extremely eco-friendly, with an emphasis on self-sufficiency, recycling and rural regeneration – not to mention a brilliant farm shop stacked full of local produce.
And whatever kind of accommodation you choose, you can fall asleep to the sounds of the owls and deer outside.
