Cymtydu is a place that 21st-century tourism seems to have forgotten, an unspoilt corner of West Wales where Ty Cwch Boathouse makes a beautiful and unique place to stay. Located at the end of a secluded valley on the spectacular Ceredigion Heritage Coast Path, with a sand and pebble beach and beautiful cliffs where wild ponies roam, Ty Cwch is an ingenious and award winning collection of eco-friendly low energy larch-clad glamping cabins crafted out of shipping containers. Sitting in a prime position just metres from the beach, it was featured on Channel 4's 'Best British Beach Huts', and it's not hard to see why.
Each of the three first floor shipping containers sleeps four people in bunk beds. There are two shared wet rooms on the first floor, accessed from the walkway, and two toilets and hot showers in the utility cabin on the ground floor. On the ground floor there’s a well-equipped communal kitchen and indoor dining area, a cosy sitting room and storage and utility cabins. The kitchen comes with everything you're likely to have at home (except a dishwasher) and there's a washing machine in the utility cabin, plus an iron, mops, brooms and a hoover. There's access to super-fast WiFi throughout, and a large canvas covered private deck, complete with up-cycled pallet furniture and boxes for storing body-boards, nets and other beach equipment. The cabins can be booked separately or all together, with the price varying according to the number of people – they also offer discounts of up to 25% for longer stays.
Cwmtydu is a special place, and Ty Cwch is a unique and peaceful spot from which to enjoy it. The beach – just 100m long – doesn’t attract large crowds, and is great for spotting seals, who return to rear their pups here every autumn. Dolphins too are common, and Cwmtydu is ideal for humans who are drawn to wild places, quiet coves and secluded stretches of coast. Paddlers can enjoy the craggy cliffs and secret inlets, and walkers can follow the Ceredigion Coast Path to many of the same hidden spots. It’s a half-mile trek to Castell Bach – 'Little Castle' – an iron age hill fort dating to 300 BC, where the remains of earthwork defences are still visible today. The small sandy cove is sheltered by a rocky knoll that has the appearance of an island, and you can sometimes find the beach empty, even on the sunniest of days. Continue further and you reach New Quay, a buzzy coastal town, home to pubs and restaurants aplenty, while, to the south, it’s the same distance to the beach and a welcoming pub at Llangrannog: all very much a joy, especially when your uniquely cosy cabin is waiting on your return.
