Step back in time on a stroll into one of the most atmospheric of Yorkshire Dales’ villages, complete with whitewashed stone cottages, ancient church, cobbled streets and a general ye-olde air of the sort that graces calendars and chocolate boxes. (We say Yorkshire Dales, but the postal and SatNav address is Cumbria – don’t get the locals started!) Pick of the pubs is the very traditional George & Dragon, where you can sink a pint from the local Dent Brewery, including a feisty Dales Way IPA, which celebrates the long-distance walk that runs right through the village. That also gives you a flavour of the visiting clientele, as does the hearty menu of pub meals that should fuel a good day’s hiking or biking hereabouts. The countryside is stunning, from gentle valley strolls to high-fells adventures, and at Dent station (actually four miles away from the village) you have access to the incomparable Settle to Carlisle Railway, one of Europe’s great train routes. Overnight stays are in the pub’s cosy-country guest bedrooms, and if you take a late-night walk down the cobbles (steady after those pints) you’ll be able to enjoy the dazzling night skies that light up Dent after dark.
