Despite the way it stands out, with its screed top and tiered crags, most people motoring up the M6 drive straight past Farleton Knott on their way to the busier mountains of the Lake District. Little do they realise that over the back of the limestone hill, there's a scenic off-grid glamping and camping site – a relaxing spot that's ideal for walkers, cyclists and nature lovers, with access straight onto the hillside and easterly views of the Yorkshire Dales. It's secluded, quiet and compassionately run, with eco-friendly facilities – owners Pam and Dan are proud to partner with the Greener Camping Club.
Situated on a working farm adjacent to Farleton Knott and Hutton Roof Crags – both Sites of Special Scientific Interest – Once Upon a Fell is well set up for families and small groups, offering a dog-friendly Arctic cabin called The Sheep Pen, bell tent camping, and a secluded private camping field. Built in 2022, the cosy wooden Sheep Pen nestles in a private garden, boasting lovely vistas towards Ingleborough, the Yorkshire Dales and the South Lakes Fells. Sleeping up to four (two adults and two children), there's style and home comforts aplenty: a double bed with a 1000 pocket sprung mattress and two singles, plus an en-suite shower room and a log-burning stove – not only for warmth, but making a cuppa and meals, too. Outside, enjoy the Kadai fire bowl/BBQ for al fresco cooking and gathering around on colder evenings while toasting s'mores. There's also a covered area with gas cooking facilities and a sink for washing up. On warmer days, laze in the Mexican hammock or pull up a pew at the table and benches and admire the glorious panoramas. Visit in springtime and you may see newborn lambs frolicking with their mums.
Standing proudly in The Top Meadow, you'll find a spacious fully-furnished bell tent sleeping four with a double bed, single mattress and small double chair bed. Holidaying with a group? You're welcome to bring three additional tents. Book The Bull Copy and enjoy a generously sized camping field for up to five tents (12 people). Fear not, you won't come across any cattle while pitching there! Whichever option you choose, there's a toilet and shower, gas cooking facilities, a fire pit and BBQ. And because none of the accommodation is located next to each other, you're guaranteed space, privacy and tranquility – bliss. It's worth noting the farm sells milk, cheese and eggs and the nearest shop is three miles away, so it's best to come prepared!
A stay here means you're in walking and biking paradise: Farleton Fell and Hutton Roof Crags are a stone's throw from the site. If you do hop in the car, Arnside & Silverdale Area of Outstanding National Beauty, the Lake District National Park, the Dales and the coast are all within easy reach, with the likes of Windermere a half-hour drive away and the historic market town of Kirkby Lonsdale just 15 minutes down the road. After a day exploring, it's back to Once Upon a Fell for relaxation time.
