Ingleton Waterfalls Trail
Ingleton North Yorkshire LA6 3ET
The best short walk in the Dales is on private land, so you have to pay for the pleasure, but it really is a joy at any time of the year. The falls are the headline-grabbers, including Thornton Force, one of the most spectacular spates in Yorkshire, where the water thunders fifty feet over a cliff edge, but there are half a dozen other spouts, falls, plunge pools and panoramic viewpoints on an undulating 4.5-mile-long circular trail through rocky terrain and woodland glens. Sadly, it's too tough a prospect for wheelchairs or pushchairs; everyone else should be able to get round in between two to four hours. There's a large car park and café at the main entrance, and a refreshment kiosk halfway round near one of the waterfalls, and there are lots of places en route where you could happily stop for a picnic.
