Reopened in March 2017, the Bull Hotel sits invitingly on the market square of the small and pleasant Cotswolds town of Fairford. It's actually made up of what used to be two separate pubs, The Bull and The George, and has a spacious interior decorated with bold colours and styles that catapult the building into the 21st century while still managing to retain a sense of timelessness with an eclectic assortment of antiques, lighting and well-chosen textiles, as well as long-standing features that make the hotel special. This includes its long-running association with fishing which continues to this day – the hotel owns the fishing rights over the lovely stretch of river to the rear of the main building.
The Bull is a cosy place above all – as a coaching inn should be – with a large and comfortable bar with open fires, local craft ales and plenty of places to loll about, and a welcoming restaurant fashioned out of the inn's old stables that has a real sense of occasion, and serves a menu of hearty Mediterranean and modern British dishes along with stone-baked pizzas. There's also a large vaulted barn for private dining and functions and a few other nooks and crannies in which to dine.
As for the rooms, there are 21 in all, mainly doubles and a couple of family suites, arranged over three floors and individually furnished to reflect their various shapes and sizes, and decorated mainly in off-whites and greys with splashes of colour here and there. They have painted shutters at the windows, feather and down duvets and good quality linen, flatscreen Freeview TVs, wifi and tea and coffee-making facilities and en-suite bathrooms with walk-in showers. Some of the higher end rooms have super kingsize beds while two rooms also have baths; toiletries are by local outfit Wold Garden. Stay in room 11 and enjoy a walk-in wardrobe, or opt for 10 and get a glimpse of an original Tudor panel wall. All in all a super comfortable place from which to explore the southern Cotswolds – and a fabulous place to eat too.
