The little village of Killin is a quiet and picturesque spot at the western edge of Loch Tay, a couple of hours north of Glasgow or Edinburgh and a good overnight halt on the way to the Highlands or further into the Loch Lomond and The Trossachs National Park. Among a gaggle of old stone houses stands the Courie Inn, with seven very nice guest rooms above a rustic pub and restaurant serving good modern Scottish and traditional dishes. You can park right outside too.
The crisply turned-out accommodation ranges from small and standard en-suite doubles to some larger rooms at the front of the house with views across to the hills. Best-in-house is the main suite, which is great for a family (king-sized bed and bunk bed), while everyone gets a Freeview TV, WiFi, tea- and coffee-making facilities. The pub-restaurant meanwhile is a cosy spot (make sure you reserve a table if you’re staying, it’s well-known locally), with the sort of Scottish portions that will see you right for a day’s walking in the nearby Munros. And if you’re not up for anything too energetic, at least check out the tumbling white waters of the Falls of Dochart that you can see from the village bridge.
