This modern lodge-style house may be named for the mountain it’s on the slopes of, but it’s a loch that will dominate your view. Loch Tay, to be precise – the largest loch in Perthshire. Meanwhile, Ben Lawers is the area’s highest munro. This epic scenery lies right outside the window of this self-catering holiday home so even if you haven’t got the stamina to tackle the mountain or the inclination to dive in the loch, you can enjoy it all the same. There are glass doors and a balcony off the open-plan living space to help you do just that.
The house has been designed upside-down to make the most of the view, with two bedrooms on the ground level and a combined kitchen, dining room and lounge upstairs on the first floor. It’s a clever set-up that also lifts you above the road that passes between you and the water – and provides a handy way to get around its shore. The kitchen is at the back of this first-floor space and is light, clean and modern. It connects to the combined dining and living room where there’s a warmer feel thanks to heather-hued sofas and walls.
That colour continues in the second bedroom where there’s a zip and link bed, so it can be used for a couple, two friends or your kids. The master bedroom, which has an en-suite shower room, is warmed by deeper reds. Although the place is spacious enough for a family of four or perhaps two couples, it’s not too big for just you and your significant other – maybe with a dog in tow. They’re welcome here, and this enviable spot in the Perthshire Highlands boasts plenty of walkies nearby.
Seasoned walkers might tackle Ben Lawers itself, but take note that at 914 metres, it’s not for the faint-hearted. Others may opt for a walk around the loch from Kenmore – the little village at its western end, just three miles down the road. Head for Taymouth Marina if you want to get out on the water by hiring a kayak or canoe or joining a Loch Tay Safari. The village offers the closest place for a bite to eat, but there’s more in the town of Aberfeldy, a scenic 15-minute drive away.
