Gloucester Road
Gloucester Road, Bristol
This traditional high street with a butcher, baker and everything but a candlestick maker to the north of the city centre is usually busy with yummy mummies, sometimes two or three abreast with their prams on the pavement. Don’t let it put you off. If you want to find some local food, the greengrocers, bakeries and butchers can certainly help; the retro shops and charity shops offer some of the best fancy dress outfits in town, and for cafés and people-watching, it’s a lovely area. If you’re in the baby zone, Born is one of the city’s most upmarket baby-gear shops; if not, peek into cafés before you go in – some turn into impromptu toddler groups at the weekend, and some have been created with babies in mind. Food wise, you can’t go wrong: Tart is one of the nicest cafés in the city and the Prince of Wales serves delicious roasts.
