SS Great Britain
Great Western Dockyard, Gas Ferry Road, Bristol BS1 6TY
When it launched in 1843, Brunel’s great ship the SS Great Britain transformed the world of travel as we knew it, breaking the previous speed limit on its maiden voyage across the Atlantic. It was a daring project at the time and made Brunel a household name, and now the ship is back in its original dock in Bristol and on view to the public. The ship houses a brilliant display, which is great for kids and gives lots of information about what life on-board was like in the 19th century, from the cramped cabins to the glittering dining hall.
