Bits of the wonderful old Wheatsheaf Inn date back to the 16th-century. But not so the stylishly modern accommodation and innovative menu in the highly-rated dining room. This farmhouse-turned-alehouse in the idyllic village of Combe Hay, just south of Bath, is a gastro-pub with rooms. All those rooms have king-size beds, Egyptian cotton sheets, rainwater showers and a welcome 'tuck box' of fresh-ground Italian coffee and other treats. Three rooms are found in a converted shed tucked away at the far end of the beer garden, all have their own entry and patio, the fourth is a family room.... in a Wendy house. Save space for a meal in the restaurant though, where food is 'fresh, local, seasonal and sustainable' – highlights might include honey-glazed duck, 21-day-aged rib-eye, south west fish pie and rhubarb and ginger cheesecake.
