On the easternmost fringe of the Mendips, in the village of the same name, this sprawling complex of traditional stone buildings dating from the fifteenth-century has been brilliantly revived by owner Sally Billington after laying dormant for several years. Originally the site of a mill, the Litton harbours 12 polished rooms, roughly split between the pub itself and the neighbouring cottage. Bearing ethereal names like Litune and Watery Combe, rooms variously feature stripped back walls and ancient oak beams alongside a vaulted ceiling here or an exposed fireplace there. All but two rooms come with garden or river view, while all those in the cottage have shared use of a private patio. Families are catered for thanks to two interlinking rooms; one room has facilities (including a wet room) for disabled guests; and canines are also welcome – towels, snacks and a drop of Pawsecco are among the treats awaiting doggo.
The impressive complement of public spaces includes a long, light-filled restaurant, a gorgeous log-warmed whiskey bar, convivial waterside terrace with fire pit, and landscaped garden furnished with upcycled beer barrels and a repurposed horsebox bar. If you don’t fancy an extended yomp around the Mendips (though why wouldn’t you?), Sally has devised a somewhat less strenuous local walk around the nearby reservoir to help shed some of those calories before rolling back to the bar, or retreating to your room for a well-earned snooze.
