There's a heady whiff of cheese in the trendy little foodie getaway village of Cartmel – best-known for its Michelin-starred L'Enclume restaurant-with-rooms but now also featuring several other artisan producers in the revamped Unsworth Yard terrace. Cartmel Cheeses boasts up to fifty British, Irish and French cheeses at any one time, with the most local being the "St James" raw ewes' milk cheese which travels all of two miles from nearby Holker Farm. You can try any of the cheeses before you buy – and get the lowdown on how they're made from the hugely knowledgable owners – while your picnic is complete once you've also picked up a few marinated olives, visited their artisan bakery next door and snagged a craft ale from the Unsworth Yard brewery.
