Sat enticingly in the pretty village of Crosthwaite, The Punch Bowl Inn is the very model of an updated country inn, serving excellent food and every day with a selection of 9 warmly furnished rooms to retire to at the end of the evening. There are gentle colour tones throughout, country cottage furniture and chic fabrics, and some have 4-posters made from reclaimed elm and free-standing clawfoot tubs, while one, Noble, sits under oak eaves and takes up the whole top floor. So comfortable will you be that you may never want to leave your delightful room but, if you do, it will probably only be to toddle down for the scrumptious meals they serve in the downstairs bar and restaurant – the menu is a diverse Franco-British affair powered by some terrific local suppliers and could feature anything from steak tartare and black pudding to local lamb and twice-baked Lancashire cheese soufflé. Outside, you’re in the glorious rolling countryside of the Lyth Valley and just a short drive from Windermere.
