Not far beyond the 'Gateway to the Lakes', Kendal and the much-touted delights of Windermere, Damson View is a glamping site with five self-contained pods. Tucked into the beautiful Lyth Valley, it’s not a busy spot despite being easy to get to, all rolling hills, sheep-scattered fields and fruit trees. This lovely site is outdoorsy but very comfortable, close to the village of Crosthwaite, a traditional place with a pretty church, a local inn that once doubled as a blacksmiths and a village school. In days gone by, you might have seen the local farmer’s children here selling damsons from their orchard up the lane. Those kids have long since grown up and instead of sharing fruit, they’re now offering their Damson View.
The orchard may be old but the glamping pods are relatively new arrivals – mini timber cabins that are a perfect size for two people. They offer everything you would expect from a self-catering cottage but in miniature: a made-up king-size bed, a bathroom with a walk-in shower, towels and toiletries, a kitchenette, sofa, dining table and TV. Outside, there's seating, a firepit and views of the village and the fields and hills beyond where you'll spy cows grazing and maybe even wild deer. It’s the limestone uplands, Cartmel Fell and Whitbarrow Scar that help shelter the valley and give it a mild and sunny microclimate – just right for growing juicy fruit and great for glampers too, as the west-facing huts are bathed in sun until it dips below the hills. Come evening, pull up an al fresco pew and admire the twinkling stars above.
With a view like that and a prime location in the Lake District National Park, it’s no surprise that Damson View is popular. The walking, cycling and outdoor opportunities around the site are magnificent, starting with the family farm’s private fell behind the pods. Climb it to see views that stretch all the way to Blackpool Tower, head up nearby Gummer’s How for views of Windermere or make your way to the shores of the lake for a cruise. And for a local bite to eat and a pint, a 10-minute amble will take you to the award-winning Punchbowl Inn. Damson View's Pods are luxurious for people who usually camp, a breath of great-value fresh air for those who are used to self-catering cottages and for glampers? You might say they're the pick of the bunch.

Nearby
It's the Lake District National Park so walkers, cyclists, climbers, wild swimmers, kayakers and sailors are spoilt for choice. A recommended local walk starts a five-minute drive from Damson View up Gummer's How, which offers a spectacular view over Lake Windermere and across to Coniston Fells. Ask on site for more recommendations. It's only a 15-minute drive to the tourist attractions of Bowness (six miles away) and Lake Windermere. Perhaps hop aboard a steam boat with Windermere Lake Cruises at Bowness and cruise round to Ambleside. Back on dry land, Grasmere is a little further (15 miles) but definitely worth a visit, with more fabulous walks like Helm Crag, Loughrigg and Rydal Water (to name just a few), as well as Sarah Nelson's Gingerbread Shop. If you prefer something a bit less energetic then you could visit Levens Hall (01539 560321) which has fantastic gardens and topiary, Sizergh Castle (01539 560951) or Blackwell Arts & Crafts House (01539 446139) which are all within 10 miles of site. For nostalgia lovers, we would recommend catching the steam train at Lakeside & Haverthwaite, which can be combined with a lake cruise.Food & Drink
The recommended Punch Bowl Inn (015395 68237), which serves food and great local ales is just a short stroll from the glamping pods. A little further away but also within walking distance are The Black Labrador (015395 68234) in Underbarrow, The Masons Arms (015395 68486) in Cartmel Fell and The Brown Horse Inn (015394 43443) in Winster (all around three miles from site).
