Not far beyond the 'Gateway to the Lakes', Kendal and the much-touted delights of Windermere, Damson View is a glamping site with five self-contained pods. Tucked into the beautiful Lyth Valley, it’s not a busy spot despite being easy to get to, all rolling hills, sheep-scattered fields and fruit trees. This lovely site is outdoorsy but very comfortable, close to the village of Crosthwaite, a traditional place with a pretty church, a local inn that once doubled as a blacksmiths and a village school. In days gone by, you might have seen the local farmer’s children here selling damsons from their orchard up the lane. Those kids have long since grown up and instead of sharing fruit, they’re now offering their Damson View.

The orchard may be old but the glamping pods are relatively new arrivals – mini timber cabins that are a perfect size for two people. They offer everything you would expect from a self-catering cottage but in miniature: a made-up king-size bed, a bathroom with a walk-in shower, towels and toiletries, a kitchenette, sofa, dining table and TV. Outside, there's seating, a firepit and views of the village and the fields and hills beyond where you'll spy cows grazing and maybe even wild deer. It’s the limestone uplands, Cartmel Fell and Whitbarrow Scar that help shelter the valley and give it a mild and sunny microclimate – just right for growing juicy fruit and great for glampers too, as the west-facing huts are bathed in sun until it dips below the hills. Come evening, pull up an al fresco pew and admire the twinkling stars above.

With a view like that and a prime location in the Lake District National Park, it’s no surprise that Damson View is popular. The walking, cycling and outdoor opportunities around the site are magnificent, starting with the family farm’s private fell behind the pods. Climb it to see views that stretch all the way to Blackpool Tower, head up nearby Gummer’s How for views of Windermere or make your way to the shores of the lake for a cruise. And for a local bite to eat and a pint, a 10-minute amble will take you to the award-winning Punchbowl Inn. Damson View's Pods are luxurious for people who usually camp, a breath of great-value fresh air for those who are used to self-catering cottages and for glampers? You might say they're the pick of the bunch.

Details

Facilities

Each self-contained pod sleeps two with a made-up king-size bed. The en-suite bathroom has a large walk-in shower, heated towel rail, toilet and basin with towels and toiletries provided. There is a compact kitchen with a sink, fridge, microwave grill, ceramic hob, kettle, toaster, cutlery and utensils. There is a sofa and a dining table and chairs and all pods have heating, electricity, a smart TV, WiFi and outside seating with a fire pit/BBQ. Wood and charcoal are available to buy on site. Shared facilities include a drying room, bike storage and a workshop which you can use for bike repairs.

Suitable For

Pods are best suited for couples, looking for a quiet relaxing getaway in the Lakes. There is only one dog-friendly pod called Fellside where one well behaved dog is most welcome.

Nearby

It's the Lake District National Park so walkers, cyclists, climbers, wild swimmers, kayakers and sailors are spoilt for choice. A recommended local walk starts a five-minute drive from Damson View up Gummer's How, which offers a spectacular view over Lake Windermere and across to Coniston Fells. Ask on site for more recommendations. It's only a 15-minute drive to the tourist attractions of Bowness (six miles away) and Lake Windermere. Perhaps hop aboard a steam boat with Windermere Lake Cruises at Bowness and cruise round to Ambleside. Back on dry land, Grasmere is a little further (15 miles) but definitely worth a visit, with more fabulous walks like Helm Crag, Loughrigg and Rydal Water (to name just a few), as well as Sarah Nelson's Gingerbread Shop. If you prefer something a bit less energetic then you could visit Levens Hall (01539 560321) which has fantastic gardens and topiary, Sizergh Castle (01539 560951) or Blackwell Arts & Crafts House (01539 446139) which are all within 10 miles of site. For nostalgia lovers, we would recommend catching the steam train at Lakeside & Haverthwaite, which can be combined with a lake cruise.

Food & Drink

The recommended Punch Bowl Inn (015395 68237), which serves food and great local ales is just a short stroll from the glamping pods. A little further away but also within walking distance are The Black Labrador (015395 68234) in Underbarrow, The Masons Arms (015395 68486) in Cartmel Fell and The Brown Horse Inn (015394 43443) in Winster (all around three miles from site).

Perfect weekend getaway!

Spent the weekend at Damson View Glamping and couldn’t ask for more. We were welcomed by the very friendly Carole and Howard who talked us through everything we needed to know about our stay, the pods were better than expected, immaculate and the little touches of crumpets and milk were appreciated. Perfect views, amazing hosts and a fantastic weekend. Thank you.

Best glamping site I’ve stayed at

Our stay at Damson View Glamping was brilliant. My partner and I booked for 3 nights and stayed in the pet-friendly pod as this was the only one available - the pod was incredibly clean with no sight of pets ever having been there. The pod is really cozy and has everything you’d need. The fire pit was lovely with BBQ tools/ facilities available for use, along with other amenities (a drying room, ice, eggs, leaflets) kept in a shed by the pods that was always open for use. This was a lovely touch and showed how thought-out the pods are. Definitely the best glamping site I’ve stayed at and would highly recommend.

Best pod yet!!!

My wife and I (and my Dad next door) stayed at Damson View for two nights and we’ll definitely be staying again! The pod was immaculate, well-equipped and in a stunning location. Eggs courtesy of Girls Aloud 🐓 were a lovely touch and The Punch Bowl does a great pint - only a minute walk away. Thanks so much Howard and Carole. Couldn’t ask for better hosts. We’ll be back in the future!

Absolutely class experience

Would recommend this glamping spot to anyone - a perfect location with a 15-minute drive to Kendal and Windermere. Views were spectacular. The pod itself is really nice, felt like being in a 4-star hotel room! The hosts were extremely welcoming and made you feel at home instantly.

Why didn't we stay longer?!

We had the best holiday in the Lake District at Damson View. The owners are so lovely, the site is well equipped where we could have a BBQ, firepit, marshmallows (a bit windy but we managed a firepit and BBQ although got very cold) and even borrowed maps to go on walks! The only negative we have is why didn't we stay longer than 3 nights?! Don't hesitate to book this amazing find. We weren't sure what a pod would be like, but they are very spacious and felt like a luxury hotel room.

My partner and I had the most lovely stay in Hilltop pod at Damson View. Carole and Howard were very welcoming and friendly and the pod was well-equipped and cozy. The BBQ supplies and fire pit were a great feature of our stay! Thanks for your hospitality.

Incredible stay

Incredible stay here. The pod was immaculate throughout and had great attention to detail. Had everything you would need and more. The views from the pod are amazing and the location is great. Used the firepit/BBQ (even in the rain!). Only a 15-minute drive to Windermere. Would definitely recommend and would most certainly return!

Stunning place!

The pods are immaculate with everything you could possibly need. If you need to get away from it all this really is the place to go so peaceful with amazing views. The hosts were lovely and welcoming and the fresh milk, butter, jam and crumpets were a lovely touch on arrival. We will definitely be returning to Damson View.

The most perfect relaxed getaway

The owners were so friendly and always available if you need them. The glamping pods were better than some hotel rooms we’ve stayed in! Very clean, well equipped and comfortable. We thoroughly enjoyed using the fire pit outside of our pod for a bbq on both nights and sitting watching the world go by. Very peaceful location. Highly recommend and we’ll be returning in future!

What a fantastic little find!

Carole and Howard were amazing hosts and did everything to make us feel welcome during our stay. Lovely setup in a great location. Immaculate and very clean. Fridge came with the essentials we needed for our stay and even had an outhouse with wood and coal. We ate at the local pub in the village (The Punch Bowl Inn) - food was so yummy and service was top-notch! Will be back again soon!

Another fantastic stay at Damson View!

A perfect location with the best hosts you could wish for. Carole and Howard pay such attention to detail to make sure everything is just perfect, from the spotlessly clean glamping pod with every amenity you could ask for as well as a shed of provisions to get your fire pit or bbq started! The views are amazing, this is truly the best holiday experience in the lakes come rain or shine and this time around we had glorious sunshine every day! Thank you again, can’t wait for our next stay with you, Sarah & David xx

Would absolutely recommend

We stayed at Damson View Glamping for my husband's birthday and our first visit to the Lake District. We were greeted by Howard who was extremely helpful and friendly. The pod was larger than we thought and incredibly clean and well-prepared. The bathroom was really nice with a powerful and hot shower. There was a fire pit and supplies so we were able to toast marshmallows in the evening. The view was amazing and a great location! Both Carole and Howard were really friendly and helpful during our stay, and we already can’t wait to go back! Would absolutely recommend Damson View Glamping for anyone wanting to stay in the Lake District.
