When we say Lake District, you think lakes and mountains, but there's a quieter, gentler side too, as typified by the Long Valley Yurts site at Moss Howe Farm campsite in the southern Lakes. Set near Witherslack in the little-known Winster Valley, it's about a charming introduction to glamping as you could wish for – a secluded, rustic location, though close to the honeypot sights of Windermere for day trips, cruises and activities.
There are four yurts on the campsite, all kitted out in the signature Long Valley style – basically, think of all the cosy comforts you need (proper futon beds on wooden floors, wood-burner/oven, fully equipped kitchen) and add Moroccan-style throws and rugs, solar fairy lights, games chest, and a central skylight for star-gazing (you're going to be doing a lot of that this deep in the National Park). What's more, all four of the yurts come with the use of a Scandinavian wood-fired hot tub – big enough for six to share, or for a couple to add a bit of romance to a Lake District break.
Toilets and hot showers are a short walk away, there's a farm shop on site, and the excellent local pub, the Derby Arms, is within walking distance (try and eat here at least once during your stay – it's great). All told, it's a pretty excellent set-up for not doing very much at all except lounging, reading, eating and drinking, though England's largest lake, Windermere, is close enough for all sorts of adventures, from stand-up paddle-boarding to wild swimming and kayaking. The Long Valley team can help book you onto various activities, while back at the site each evening you've got plenty of chance to barbecue, roast marshmallows and knock back a glass or two of wine in the hot tub.
This might just be about the most chilled glamping gets, certainly with Long Valley Yurts, who have other sites in the Lake District near Coniston, Keswick and another overlooking the shores of Windermere that are all fabulous in their way but not quite as intimate and off-the-beaten-track. 'A country mile from anywhere' they say, and we can't argue with that.

There are countless walks starting from the campsite which are
suitable for families. A short stroll down to the village for a pint in
the wonderful Derby Arms is recommended. Ask at the campsite shop for a
map showing footpaths, have fun making your way through the woods and take a
torch if you think you may get waylaid in the pub! An absolute must is the walk up and along the glorious Whitbarrow
Scar to Lords Seat. It's a great walk for all the family and at the top
it offers truly magnificent views, south over Morecambe Bay and beyond
(on a good day you make out Blackpool Tower), and north over the beautiful Lake District fells.
