Cuckoo Brow is a gloriously cosy hideaway, buried away in Far Sawry, just a hop, skip and a jump from Beatrix Potter’s old home at Hill Top and a short(ish) stroll down to the ferry across to Bowness, and yet you will truly feel as if you are a million miles from the modern world. Recently renovated, the rooms are smart and contemporary with deep baths and plenty of big fluffy towels to wrap up in afterwards. There are a range of rooms available to choose from, including doubles rooms with super-king-size double beds to family rooms with bunk beds; all have flatscreen TVs and tea- and coffee-making facilities.
Dogs are positively encouraged and are allowed everywhere. On winter afternoons, as the frost nips the air outside, the bar is a snug retreat with an open fire and assorted dogs snoozing around the legs of the nearby tables. During the summer months there is an outside seating area offering tranquil views of the surrounding fells. Dining is relaxed and the chef prides himself on sourcing as many ingredients as he can from within the county. The menu sports the traditional pub classics, prefect after a long day on the fells, as well as more contemporary options, and changes with the seasons to make best use of local ingredients. Breakfasts are excellent, and again all made using local produce.
The welcoming reception area doubles as a small shop for any items you may have forgotten, including dog bowls, and dogs are allowed in bedrooms unsupervised, although they request that you leave a mobile number for contact in case your pet becomes distressed. With plenty of walks right on your doorstep there’s plenty to wear out everyone so the only thing likely to disturb the peace is the odd snore or two.
