We love it, you love it, everyone loves the Lake District. The fells and lakes, the peaks and valleys, the lovely towns and villages all make for a magical combination that’s been attracting people for generations. And while it may be a classic destination with a lot of history, there are also pockets of contemporary cool – if you know where to look. That, of course, is where we come in, and if it’s self-catering modern luxury you’re after, Cassius Living is not a bad place to start. Their growing collection of properties in and around Bowness-on-Windermere can accommodate you in super-chic Scandi-style, whether you’re coming with a significant other or a large group of friends.
There are currently five properties in the Cassius Living portfolio, each designed with clean lines, simple colours and plenty of glass to let the outside in. Although each one is different, they all share the same look and feel – walls are white, with furnishings and features in black, anthracite or walnut, in a pleasingly tidy style that's warmed up with a modern log burner in each open-plan living room and sumptuous rugs, upholstery and cushions where comfort is needed. WiFi is fast, TVs are Smart, there are Sonos or Bluetooth speakers, and Neff appliances in the kitchen. Everything here is high-end.
Four of the five properties are a few minutes’ walk from the centre of Bowness-on-Windermere, and three – Mayfair, Berkeley and Richmond – are situated in the same cul-de-sac. This makes them a great choice for a group holiday where you want a bit more space and separation than a single property. In fact, all the properties' 12 bedrooms have their own en-suite shower and toilet – not to mention a Smart TV. These are boutique hotel-standard bedrooms with the convenience of self-catering facilities downstairs. The fifth property, Riverside Barn (aka The Old Smithy), offers a couple on their own even more space and seclusion, being a 15-minute drive away in the village of Bowland Bridge. As a bolt-on to a group holiday – it works. As a romantic getaway, it’s a dream.
Bowness-on-Windermere is a great base for The Lake District, and once you’ve parked up, you needn’t get back in your car if you don’t want to. You can walk to The World of Beatrix Potter or hike up Brant Fell on local footpaths. You can stroll into town for lunch, dinner or afternoon tea, go paddleboarding on England’s largest lake, and use the famous Windermere Steamers to visit places on its shore – including Wray Castle, Ambleside and plenty more besides.
