The Brick Kilns
Norwich Road Little Plumstead Norfolk NR13 5JH
You can't miss the Brick Kilns, pink and proud on the Norwich road on the edge of the village of Little Plumstead. It's just about a Broadland pub – the village of Salhouse is just a couple of miles up the road – and although you can come in just for a drink, the focus very much on food, with separate menus devoted to fish, meat and even vegan and vegetarian choices. The food isn't isn't gourmet fare, and we wouldn't especially describe the Brick Kilns as a gastro pub. But it specializes in classy – and hearty – pub grub, served in generous portions, in an environment that's as cosy and friendly as it gets. No wonder it's such a big hit with the regulars, and no wonder you're well advised book or at least call before turning up. Fish mains include haddock, sole and excellent skate, all fresh from Lowestoft docks and cooked to order in whichever way you like; they also serve great local sausages, lamb chops liberally doused in rosemary and garlic and a mixed grill they describe as 'a major eating experience' (we haven't tried it, but who are we to argue?). The veggie menu meanwhile is a triumph, with a fine nut roast, fennel casserole and veggie toad-in-the-hole to satisfy even the most ardent non-carnivore. They also now do accommodation, with three newly refurbished upstairs rooms that are excellent value for money.
